Dan's Ramblings

Dan here ~

Thursday evening, not much happening here on the pond of late but that is about to change. Tonight they are saying frost. Were I still “farming” in Rangeley I would be looking at a freeze tonight.

Well today I began the process of cutting the window boxes back and dumping them out. I used to consider that if I did it just before frost, than I won not Mother Nature. I only did the saddest looking ones. I did cover up one plant out back just to see if it made a difference. I mainly was covering a tomato plant that had arisen as a weed.

Lena Longarm

Carol here ~

I got Lena Longarm up and running again, figured she had a long enough of a break as I haven't used her since the beginning of July.  I loaded a donation quilt on her and we quilted it up over the weekend.  Dan pieced this quilt back in the spring using a bunch of orphan blocks.  Read about it here.

I used the pattern "Chantilly" by Urban Elementz.

Dan's Ramblings

Dan here ~

The weather of fall has arrived, cold, wet and rainy. Today, Tuesday, was quite chilly.

I picked the last of the tomatoes and cut down and removed the carcasses along with storing the tubs they were growing in. I stripped down the first and picked up the metal tub and took care of it. I then proceeded with the other one. I found myself pulling and struggling to even get the tub off the ground to say nothing of lifting it into the wheelbarrow. I know I have lost a great deal of my strength but come on, this container is about the same size as the one I already took care of. Finally I managed to get one side off the ground and get my hand underneath and found a 1/2” taproot going into the crushed rock below the tub and extending about a foot and a half into the ground below. No wonder it was growing so good.

This and That

Carol here ~

I got the Morning Star quilt washed, dried and on the bed ~ I love this quilt!

This quilt was pieced by Dan in 2010 during our vacation at Jekyll Island, GA.  I quilted it this past spring and got it bound last month.  About time, huh?

The pattern is from the book "Nickel Quilts" by Pat Speth and Charlene Thode.  I believe it is still available to purchase from Amazon.

Dan's Ramblings ~ The Internet Saga

Dan here ~

In the studio tonight.

Forecast has been saying rain all day. I got up early this AM, well early for me. I took off just after 8:00 in hopes of getting some of my steps in before I got wet. Based on the forecast, I had resigned myself to the fact that today would be a lousy day, walk wise. So going early I said to myself “almost 13,000 steps, if that’s all I get today so be it”. (I knew it was me ‘cause I recognized my voice).

I went back home, watered the window boxes in case the wind blows wicked hard they stand a better chance they won’t blow over. I finally had my coffee and breakfast. I was still waiting for it to rain so I goofed around awhile and figured now lunch was in order. Then after lunch, of course, I needed a nap, then I had no choice but to go to the cell phone store. This was the chore for the day, the chore that I had saved for today's rainy day. Hadn’t rained yet. I couldn’t put it off any longer though.

Fall

Carol here ~

I had the the itch to stitch with fall fabrics.  Made a handful of potholders/hotmats, figured we had room for those!  Gifted a couple so still have three left for us.

Dan's Ramblings

Dan here ~

Sunday evening, was out by the fire with oldest grandson, Evan. He eats, drinks, sleeps guitars. So you got it, we were out by the fire playing guitars. I told you earlier that I was going to attempt to pick it up again. I have been trying, but dang it hurts the fingertips. You know those fingers on my left hand, the ones responsible for getting fabric in the correct position for the steam iron to press the seams flat? Those fingers really hate the steam now. I thought it was hot before, now those tender fingers don’t like practicing or sewing.

Erin and both of her boys, Evan and Parker came for a while today.

Carol went out on the paddle board looking for turtles.

Happy September! What a change in the weather September 1st brought, almost like a switch has been flipped.  We went for a bike ride earlier in the week where it was too hot to yesterday when I was chilly all day.

Saw these red leaves on our walk yesterday, fall is on it's way.

Dan's Ramblings

Dan here ~ Thursday evening. It was a nice calm day today. I managed to burn off some of the wood I have been pulling off the pond. Unfor...
