Dan's Ramblings

Dan here ~

Well, we lost power again. We went on generator Friday morning. We got power back Tuesday mid morning.

We opted to not leave on all the time this time. We would turn on generator for 4-5 hours maybe longer over the dinner hour so I could cook meals. I roasted a chicken on Sunday so it was on for a while. Then I would shut off the generator and either take a nap or listen to my book with the head phones on as Carol read her book. It got old quick as we had no idea when the power would be turned back on.

We are also at the mercy of the propane delivery outfit. If I keep turning the generator off then I regulate when I run out of propane. It’s a good feeling knowing that there is still some left to warm up the house again while waiting to get more. Were delivery to be counted on I would leave it on most of the time. I can’t sew if the power is off.

The wind blew, there are no words to describe it. There are trees and branches down everywhere. Carol said she saw it raining branches out onto the pond.

Dan's Ramblings

Dan here ~

The calm before the storm. It is supposed to get very windy and rainy. I personally think I prefer snow this time of year. It seems that the cold is not as cold when there is snow on the ground. I don’t need a lot of snow, just enough to keep the ground covered and not too dirty looking.

I wonder if the up coming warmer weather will do anything to the ice on the pond. I went about ten feet from shore and drilled through the ice and at that spot it was about six inches deep. It would not be bad if that was clear frozen water, however much of what I drilled appeared to be more snow than ice. I don’t really like the pond a lot in the winter. I seldom go swimming in the summer, I don’t relish the idea of going this time of year.

I started the humidifier the other day, it always seems that everything is dry this time of year. My hands are dry and rough and fabric and thread sticks to them. I find this annoying. Last night my hands were all red. The food coloring filled every crevice in my dry fingers.

Let me back up. Carol went to Farmington to meet Erin and bring her the present she had picked up in Portland for Parker. With that going to happen Carol made rolls for Parker and I made two batches of Spritz cookies with the cookie press.

Power!

Carol here ~

We started with a full tank of propane when the power went off early Saturday morning.

After running the generator all weekend we were down to 30% by Monday morning so Dan called the propane company to come fill it.  They arrived mid-afternoon with power coming on about 15 minutes later.  Yahoo!

Kind of a pricey weekend.  BUT!  We were warm, were able to shower, cook, do laundry and have our morning coffee ~ and that is Priceless!

Dan's Ramblings

Dan here ~

Sunday evening, the day after the storm. We have been without power and running on backup generator for a day and a half now. It is nice to continue along with life with full use of everything but the noise is monotonous. I can’t wait for it to be back to power provided by the power company. Not power by propane.

There are a lot of trees and large branches down everywhere. Had a close call for the shelter logic hoop house,

Dan's Ramblings

Dan here ~

Tuesday evening. I think that winter has arrived and I’d better be up to shoveling strength because it may well be in my near future.

I loaded up the truck today because we figured I was capable of getting to the dump and back. I climbed into the truck, inserted the key and upon turning the key, nothing. I mean nothing. I guess the poor thing didn’t like being ignored since back on November 20 when I stopped using it to have my surgery. Now to have a pain in the butt because my truck won’t start. AAA came and got me running and I left it running a while then took off to do errands. I got 3 to 4 miles from home and all sorts of alarms started going off, I pulled over and truck died. Did not restart. AAA again came, I went back home left truck running about an hour. Shut off, tried restart, total dead, nothing. Don’t know what next step is. It’s loaded for the dump, maybe I’ll just leave it there, got to get it running first. Once running I’ll probably change my mind about leaving it there.

Dan's Ramblings

Dan here ~

Thursday evening. Sitting here wondering where the time goes. Since my surgery I do a lot of sitting around or taking a nap. I’ve gotten quite adapt in the nap department. Sadly, sometimes the nap wins out over going up to the studio to sew. Solitaire is a popular pastime as well.

I have been managing my 5000 steps around the house, at least no more days of accomplishing the process in 3-5 minute segments before I need to sit for a while. That said, remember, I live in a very small house. I have surpassed the 2022 mile marker but it just doesn’t seem like that big a deal anymore. I won’t set out to aim for 2023 miles for next year. I only hope something comes along more interesting to fill those non walking hours. If I remember right, that was what started the walking.

Dan's Ramblings

Dan here ~

December 1. The last month of 2022.

I hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving. Carol went to Vanessa’s home and celebrated with the family. Alas, I stayed home. As I briefly mentioned last time I had issues and was not up to traveling that far. Truth be told I’m still not. I had surgery on the 21st and was not willing to go. I endured hemorrhoid surgery, not something I would wish on my worst enemy.

Quilts and a Recipe

Carol here ~  I've had a couple good out front patio binding sessions this week. I finished up 2024-3 earlier in the week 2024-3 and 202...
