Dempsey Center

You all probably know that Dan and I continue to enjoy all aspects of quilting. The problem is we don’t need any more quilts as we don’t have storage capacity for them.

So, a few weeks ago I contacted The Dempsey Center in Lewiston to see if they had a quilt donation program and YES they do!

Some of you might be familiar with The Dempsey Center either by taking advantage of their many complementary programs for cancer patients and their families and/or participating in the annual Dempsey Challenge Fundraiser.

What a beautiful day yesterday was. A lot of puttering happened. Some wood splitting, some raking and some general sprucing up of the woods around the area. No real reason for it but it gives me something to do. Here are a couple shots of my view as I sit by the fire last evening.

Jakob got to try out his remote controlled speedboat the other day.  That thing moves!  And the battery lasts a long time, think he wore out before the battery did.

This is not really my favorite time of year. I like the waking up of the various forms of vegetation. I don’t like the varying temperatures. The buds are getting very red on the maple trees now as they anxiously await a few warm days to begin opening up. The woods will rapidly close in as the leaves open up and I will loose my ability to look very far into the woods.

Two Common Loons have been seen fishing and cruising around the pond. We saw some antics one of them was performing. We thought maybe it had gone loony, it was flopping around and flapping it’s wings and acting very weird. We thought maybe there was something wrong with it. I finally took it to the Google and found out that the loon was performing an in depth cleaning. It’s antics were it’s way of getting water over and around all of it’s feathers to rid itself of foreign materials and parasites etc. Interesting, it was quite a sight to see.

I love looking out my front windows and seeing water!

I snapped this pix the other morning when it was actually calm for a change.  The wind has been howling most of the time.  Dan got our kayaks out and ready for a paddle but haven't used them yet because of the wind.

Not much happening on this end. Hard to get anything accomplished around here. There is two adult bald eagles and one younger one that have been harassing the ducks of late. They are fascinating to watch. 

The young one is by far the largest of the three. We have been watching, trying to figure out whether the eagles are trying to catch a duck or to startle one as it pops up from it’s fishing dive and maybe loose it’s catch. When the ducks are close to this end you can see that they have fish in their beaks. Sometimes there are other ducks that will chase them trying to steal their catch. Nature, fun to watch.

As I said last time the ice is out. The wind has been blowing ever since. Well, it seems it anyway. The first raking of the incoming sticks etc. were removed from the beach. I will now be able to do it again every day or so for the next 7 months until it freezes again. Ahhh, life on the pond.

Thursday nights time-lapse view shows reflection on the water. The ice is out.

It is leaving behind a great many sticks, twigs and large branches.  I guess they will need to be removed from the beach.  

The kayaks will need to be pulled out from under the porch and see if they still float.  The chairs will need to be pulled from the shed and placed around as well.

The ice is just about out of the pond. Maybe today or tomorrow? This is what it looked like yesterday morning.
