Dan's Ramblings

Dan here ~

Thursday evening. Nice day today, a little breezy here today, calming down nicely now. I may be forced to have a fire. Only problem is, is that I soaked the fire pit so I could empty the ashes. In order to have a fire it would require me to walk the couple hundred yards up to the shed and back where the wheelbarrow is. I keep threatening that I will buy another to have one up there and one down here. Sad to say I don’t really have room for a wheelbarrow to be kept down by the house. I suppose walking back and forth all the time will keep me thin. It gets dark so early now that by the time I finish writing this it will be dark anyway, so the heck with a fire.

I have been cutting more branches that hang into the road so the snow can’t bring them down. It’s a lot warmer cleaning up the debris now than in January. I cut one branch and was looking up and saw this wasp’s nest and decided I would leave it alone.

I wonder if this is where the wasps live that are in my flowers along the retaining wall. There are usually quite a few that come out from beneath the foliage as I water every day.

Speaking of watering, there is becoming less to water as I abandon my planters. Two tomatoes have been eliminated, the onions never did much and the carrots only did a little better. The carrots are good but were not real plentiful or consistently large in size. Considering they were planted in an area about 14” x 24” they did ok. The tomatoes still producing are the weeds I babied earlier this spring and another plant that came up in the big back planter all by itself. A hitchhiker so to speak. Good thing I left it. It is about the only thing still in the planter that is being productive.

When we had the quilt shop we had a large display case in the middle of the showroom floor. We had it full of quilts. We have been trying to sell it on Marketplace, to no avail. We thought I should mention it here. It is about 7’ tall 4’ wide and 20” deep. If interested, I can get more accurate measurements for you. (the measurements I took are in the shed and remember it is up on the hill in the dark). I would take my truck up and get the note I made but, alas my truck is up on the hill because there is no room for it down here.

The case holds a lot of quilts. It was originally in Pickels store in Rangeley. It was made by Grand Rapids Showcase Co. My best guess is mid 1800’s. We are asking $1200 or best offer. Remember my comment about the wheelbarrow and my truck? The same concept applies to every avenue of my life. I have no room in the house for the show case, therefore it is in the shed. I can’t hardly move in the shed because all the fabric is there as well as everything else that won’t fit in the house. Is anyone interested in it? We would love to see it disappear.

In the studio quilt #27 for 2025 is heading in a direction. They appear to be 8” finished blocks with something for sashing and corner stones. Still TSTT what will happen with the sashing. The blocks have a direction. Here are a couple samples.

I only have about half of the blocks complete at this time. While I was cleaning up and making units I made many that will not be used until another quilt. That is the joy of scrap quilts. I can usually find a home somewhere for them later. As I think I’ve said before, I enjoy making the units better than assembling them into a quilt. Maybe by next week we can see what this one will look like. Time will tell. I’m curious, are you?

The weekend is coming, I think we may see a little rain. I don’t think anything major. The storm the other day washed some on the driveway and I have repaired some of it. I’m finding I don’t have as much energy as I used to. Have no idea what the cause of that may be.

Enjoy your weekend and stay safe.
