Thursday again, I guess. In my head it has been Saturday all day since I went to bed last night thinking it was Friday.
We had our taste of “boy it’s nice to be able to go outside and not freeze” and back to “Damn if the wind isn’t howling and it isn’t back in the 30’s again.” Short spring. Is knew it was too good to last, but there is always hope. The weather people are talking about more snow and wet weather over the weekend and the first of next week. Good studio weather, as if I need an excuse to sew.
This week moving around with my eyes open, I spied a piece of tail. It looks to be from a red squirrel. My guess is it was no longer needed.

Another observed sighting was a turkey strutting his stuff. There were more females around than the one in the photo.
The town graded the road enough to make it passable for a while. It’s getting pretty bad again already though. We did get mail the last few days, although I did have to go get my coffee at the post office before they were delivering again. Didn’t want to run out, don’t you know. Time will tell when or if they will make it a lot better.
It has been interesting watching the changes to the pond as the season tries to change from winter to spring. Earlier in the season, the edge of the pond in front of the house was starting to get open water along the beach. No longer, maybe the wind has pushed everything our way. What we are seeing are areas of open water that appeared to have started in the middle of the pond and have been growing as we watched over time. Today the largest one overtook some smaller ones and the open water is getting quite large. On a trip to Auburn to get fish for supper, I noticed that from the other end of the pond that the larger open area appears to go all the way to the other end. I wonder what will happen as we roll into this weekend. You guessed it time will tell.
In the studio I am working on quilt #11 for 2025, which also happens to be our graduating grandson Parker’s quilt. He is a serious Brazilian jiu-jitsu contender and this was why, I believe, the colors were chosen. The small center block in the V-block star and the other block was designed to hint at his mastery of the Rubik’s cube. Here are the two blocks I used to construct the quilt.
Parker saw the EQ8 drawing but he will have to wait to see the final version when he is gifted it. Some of you may see it on a quilting site, but I don’t think Parker visits those. The rest of you will have to wait until graduation for the reveal here.
The graduating granddaughter, Kailey’s quilt has been designed and tweaked several times and now has a working design. I have started doing some cutting as the fabric needed to finish Parker’s border was being soaked/washed etc. Her quilt is being centered around her favorite thing. Birds. We found some small bird panels on the internet. After they are cut apart I will frame them and begin to transform them into 8-1/2” finished blocks. Here is an example of the panel.
The panels consist of several different species of birds and, I think, they look quite realistic. Not a terribly difficult quilt but repetitious, but I guess most quilts are. At least the quilt will use 8-1/2” blocks not 3” so it should progress quite quickly. Then I believe it will be back to my scrappy lap quilts. The two grand quilts are slightly larger than my “normal”. These will be about 70” x 90”.
Enjoy your weekend, as I said my weather is supposed to be winter/winter mix. I translate this and hear “the weather will be crap, for minute by minute updates, look out the dang window.”
Stay safe.
