Show Quilts ~ Part 1

Carol here ~

I guess it's time to display the show quilts to you. Many of you have seen them before in person when attending a quilt show where they were hanging. If not, I guess you'll see them now.

We photographed them for our records with all the ribbons won per quilt but as I mentioned before the lighting is not great here and we are just using our phones so....if I can find good photo's of the quilts in a show I will post them also.

We are missing a handful of judging sheets and also a few appraisals.  Still looking...

LOG CABIN LEFTOVERS, designed and pieced by Dan, free motion quilted by me. (the fabric is too busy to see much of the quilting) This received a Blue Ribbon at Maine Quilts.

From Dan ~ Back during early quilt camps at the Country Club Inn, I would look through ideas and see what I could work on while I tended shop and after I came home for the evening. This particular year I was going through some scraps and leftovers and found the fabric leftover after Carol made the quilts for the log cabin room at our Quilt Inn. I started playing and scrounging for more of the same fabrics because I did not want to add any new. After assembling the log cabin blocks and finding that nice spot to put an appliqué I decided on the moose and the bear. The bear paw blocks worked well in the corners even though I needed to cut off the corners of the frame around them. The piano key border with the modified bear paw blocks in the border wrapped it all together. If I remember right I returned to the quilt camp on Sunday with the top complete.

Judges comments ~ Nice use of log cabin blocks, strong symmetrical design, terrific quilting. And this cracks me up ~ one judge said applique could use some work, another judge said nice applique technique.

CRYSTAL STARS is another designed by Dan and free motion quilted by me.  This received a Red Ribbon at Maine Quilts and a Blue Ribbon at Machine Quilter's Expo (MQX) It was also displayed at Innovations and Lowell Quilt Festival.

From Dan ~ Crystal Stars was designed and at least started while tending shop on another year’s quilt camp. I do not remember completing it during the weekend. I do remember that when I took the initial few blocks up the first night when I went up for supper that Carol was not too impressed. What I remember was bringing up the initial blocks, these were the large ones in the center. I continued forward and added the Lemoyne Stars and the pinwheels and I believe it grew together fairly well.

I used a slightly variegated purple thread for the quilting, filled the open spaces with lots of feathers (my fav) and curly-q's, along with some straight lines

Judges comments ~ the judging is based on number of points per catergory ~ overall impression, design, construction, machine quilting, etc.

In this particular show (not saying which) we received 98 points each from two judges with nice comments ~ precision quilted noted, quilting enhances the quilts, exciting quilt.  The third judge did not like much about it, we received a score of 71.  You never know...

QUADRUPLE BYPASS was designed and quilted by me. I designed this quilt at my mother's hospital bedside during her quadruple bypass surgery in 2007. The four feathered stars represent the four repaired arteries and the pieced shaded sawtooth border was inspired by the rhythmic sounds of the cardiac monitor. Lots of open background space allowed me to quilt my favorite feathers.

This quilt was awarded a Purple Ribbon (exceptional merit) and Best of Show at Maine Quilts, a teacher award at MQX and was displayed at Innovations.

Here are the ribbons, we did not take a photo with them on the quilt because the quilt hangs on the slant wall up in our quilting studio.

back

My mother (Avis Coolidge) and I at the Maine Quilt Show with "our" quilt.

Judges comments ~ Beautiful quilting, outstanding interpretation of Feathered Star, spectacular quilting, could have used two batts. (I agree with that but it was before I knew two batts could be used)

Check in with Dan's Ramblings on Friday as he continues with the show quilts.

Hope you enjoyed so far!
