Dan's Ramblings: Show Quilts Part 4

Dan here ~

Thursday again. I heard an interesting thought on that whole time moving faster as we get older thing. His idea is that as a child we encounter a wide variety of new experiences often multiple times a day. Hence the day is new and refreshing. As we age we get into routines and usually very little new happens in our lives. I know this makes sense to me as pretty much every day is about the same as the day before. Except for meals. I try to have a few days between the different meal ideas. Those ideas are very different than my quilting ideas, there is a lot of repetition. Maybe I need to take up skydiving or something for a new and exciting thing to do. I have a good idea that my immediate new experience will be how well this years snow removal goes.

Show Quilts ~ Part 3

Carol here ~

Continuing on with our show quilts, the next three are mine.

SHOW ME THE WAY HOME ~ designed, pieced and quilted by me. This one received a Purple Ribbon (excellence) and Best of Show at Maine Quilts, was displayed at Innovations and Machine Quilter's Expo.

The Mariner's Compass blocks were constructed with Brenda Henning's paper piecing technique.  I then surrounded it with flying geese heading north, south, east and west, set on point.  I added the partial compass blocks and bordered the quilt with a favorite block, Rangeley Stars.  The quilting is all freehand using a variegated thread.  (what was I thinking?)

Show Quilts ~ Part 1

Carol here ~

I guess it's time to display the show quilts to you. Many of you have seen them before in person when attending a quilt show where they were hanging. If not, I guess you'll see them now.

We photographed them for our records with all the ribbons won per quilt but as I mentioned before the lighting is not great here and we are just using our phones so....if I can find good photo's of the quilts in a show I will post them also.

We are missing a handful of judging sheets and also a few appraisals.  Still looking...

Dan's Ramblings

Dan here ~

Can you believe it? Another week has gone by. Boy it sure is colder now and here on the pond the wind blew straight at us all day, It was way too cold and windy to do any leaf removal. The load count is now at 25. I’m sure that will go up fast once the wind calms down a little. I would have needed to either tied a tether to the tractor or filled my boots with rocks so I did not blow away in order to work out there today. When I was bringing in the steak at supper I was afraid it was going to blow off the plate. Glad it didn’t, because it was good.

Here is my 3 second time lapse taken at 8:00 this evening.

Not Yet

Carol here ~

I don't have any of the show quilts ready for you yet.  We've found the container of ribbons

and the paperwork which I've managed to organize by year.  Now the hard part ~ some of the judging score sheets do not have the name of the quilt on them, just scoring and notes.

Dan's Ramblings

Dan here ~

The wind finally calmed down, I suppose I could have a fire but I’ve been cold all day. The weather sure did change fast. I takes me a while to get accustomed to the cold and I ain’t there yet. I had almost as many clothes on as in late November as I relocated more of my woodpile and removed leaves and pine needles from the beach.

I do admit, the first thing I do this time of year when I get up I go to see how covered the beach and shore is with leaves. A couple days ago I awoke to this.

Lotsa Quilts ~ Part 5

Carol here ~

Here we go with the last of the "shed" quilts. They have all been washed or aired out, photographed and documented.  I purchased these containers to store them in.

We filled five of them.  Each container is labeled and I have a list of which quilts are in which container.

Dan's Ramblings

Dan here ~

Thursday evening by the fire. Pretty evening albeit a bit chilly.

I suppose that is to be expected this time of year. That doesn’t mean I have to like it. The way the wind was blowing the other day I could have sworn that it was raining maple leaves. The pond was covered with them as well and you know where they were heading. The tractor bucket total for leaf removal this year so far, is only at two. I hauled a few wheelbarrows into the woods down here because I knew they contained only leaves and pine needles with very little sand.

Lotsa Quilts ~ Part 4

Carol here ~

Happy October!

We sure are having beautiful fall weather.  Hope you are able to get out and enjoy the foliage.  We are starting to get quite a bit of color around the pond.

It's been so nice out that I haven't wanted to be up in the quilting studio so I haven't accomplished too much.

Last Show Quilt

Carol here ~  Happy Thanksgiving week! I made vegan bread for the vegan grandson yesterday, will make yeast rolls for the rest of us today. ...
