Dan's Ramblings

Dan here ~

Thursday evening by the fire. Pretty evening albeit a bit chilly.

I suppose that is to be expected this time of year. That doesn’t mean I have to like it. The way the wind was blowing the other day I could have sworn that it was raining maple leaves. The pond was covered with them as well and you know where they were heading. The tractor bucket total for leaf removal this year so far, is only at two. I hauled a few wheelbarrows into the woods down here because I knew they contained only leaves and pine needles with very little sand.

I knew that because I had harvested them differently than normal. Instead of using a lawn rake and raking them unto the shore, I pulled them into the pond and used a large net and scooped up the floating leaves and pine needles but also could scoop up those on the bottom. Any snails that were noticed were removed as well. A couple dunks and the sand is gone and a simple flip of the net empties it. Either dumping in piles on the beach or directly into the tractor bucket. I have no idea how well this process will work when the leaves arrive in huge amounts, I guess time will tell.

I had an opportunity to assist an up the pond neighbor as well as play with the tractor earlier this week. He was attempting to repair some water erosion as well as possibly redirect future runoff water. We moved around several yards of compacting gravel. Hopefully it works as hoped. You got it, time will tell.

Today I spent the day moving and tearing down the wood pile I have been working on for the last few weeks.

I sold more wood to my neighbor, so I am filling his woodbox.

Both sides this time. Last time I only filled one side. Each side holds about a cord or a little less. I had tried to sell the pile on a Facebook page for locals with no takers. Then within an hour or so of deleting that, the neighbor texted me about buying some more wood. We agreed on filling the complete woodbox for a fee and I got one side done today and a good start on the other.

I should be able to finish it up tomorrow.

In the studio I am still working on #28 for 2025. I am remembering how much of a pain designing on the fly can be. The main block I showed you last time did not change.

What did change is the half blocks I told you about last time I ended up not needing. I also decided that I did not want the four 10” blocks I made for the corners of the quilt, I wanted them to be a little smaller. So I used the already made 10” blocks and used them in place of the half blocks. Then took the half blocks completely apart down to their units. ( 1/2 square, v-blocks etc.)

I then re-trimmed those units down to be 1-1/2” units and not 2”. Then made the rest of the units needed to make the four smaller blocks. Now finishing at 7-1/2” instead of 10".  I had already made two blocks shrunk down to 5” F. These are to go top and bottom trying to fill some negative space.

Carol would have had a ball in the days of custom quilting on this one. You will probably have to wait until next week for a reveal, as currently I am sitting by the fire and there is several hours of sewing left to complete the top. I do know one thing, scrappy is a lot more adaptable and forgiving. Both methods can be fun. Both types of quilts can keep you warm snuggled on the couch. I guess that is all that matters.

Well I came in from the fire and managed to as they say “git ur done”. I don’t know if there is more to say about the quilt. Are there things I would do differently were I doing it again? (which I ain’t) There always are some “wish I dids” when I design on the fly. I did take a fair amount apart on this one in order to get to here. It’s done, I wonder what’s next, I’ll bet it’s scrappy.

Until next time stay safe and enjoy the fall.
