Dan's Ramblings

Dan here ~

Thursday evening. Beautiful sunset on Saturday before the temperatures began to drop.

The weather here has been rather cold and extremely windy. We had to remove most of the bird feeders for fear they would blow off and come through the window. Some parts were already separated in the wind. They are still on the ground where they landed. Too windy out there for me. I can feel the house shake during many of the wind gusts.

We have a plastic shed about 2-1/2’ x 4’ x 7’. It is where life vests and folding chairs are stored along with whatever else will fit in it. In a past year the wind blew it completely over and moved it about ten feet in the process. In the process of relocating itself all the pieces were broken apart and the entire shed needed to be reassembled. When I reassembled it I used screws to hold it together not relying on the snap together concept from the first time.

Last night while I was out removing some of the bird feeders, I found the shed was now residing beside the front entrance and had rotated 180º. I pushed it around the corner and up against the side of the building. It is still there over 24 hours later, hopefully, we will be all set for now. Our carpenter is supposed to be building us a regulation wooden one that hopefully will be heavy enough to stay where we put it. I’ll attempt to move this one back where it was if the wind ever lets up. I’ll probably attempt to anchor it to the house this time. Just goes to show the power of the wind.

Speaking of the wind, during one of last years storms several trees were uprooted and fell into Mud pond. They were not really that appealing to look at.

I have been taking advantage of the ice and am cutting up the mess and removing it all from the pond. I have removed several 55 gallon barrels filled with the sticks and branches. A lot of good firewood in the mess. Not that I need any more firewood.

It was too windy out to work on the pond today, so we went to Portland to pick up three sewing machines that we were having serviced. Hopefully the needle arm they replaced on mine will allow the needle to remain straight and not fall out as I sew. I’ll continue using my other Pfaff for now as it is working quite well and was just serviced elsewhere. Carol took her backup machine (one of them) down for service today as we picked the others up. Time will tell, maybe I’ll send mine in when we pick up Carol’s. Carol’s great niece’s featherweight came back all ready to sew as well with a new foot pedal.

In the studio I managed to get #1 for 2025 completed. It was a challenge to bring the 27” square center (I showed you last time) to my more normal size top of about 67” x 77”. With the use of sashing and a little imagination I managed to make a rectangle out of my square center.

2025-1

The idea of the partial blocks along either side gave me the width I wanted without adding height. I was pleased with the result.

I then went back to cleaning up scraps and trying to organize my work area. I did quite well for a day or two then an idea surfaced and off we went to try it. Blocks are looking like this.

The corners were popped to go with the sashing strips to add a secondary accent to the design. There is still quite a bit of work to do on it, even though many of the blocks are popped and ready to go. Most of the sashing strips will require popping as well. I kinda like my popping tools. They come in real handy making the blocks disappear into the background and adding lots of movement to a quilt. This cold affords a lot of quilting time as I try to stay warm.

Hopefully the wind stops blowing on Saturday and I can get some more cleanup on the pond accomplished. I doubt it will be calm enough to burn off any of the twigs etc. but who knows. It would not seem so cold if either A: we get snow or B: the wind stops blowing. I’ll take B and the calmer weather, I’m still waiting for the tractor heater to be replaced so snow can wait. Using the tractor this time of year with a heater is much a more pleasant experience.

Enjoy your weekend, stay safe and warm, Spring’s coming.
