Dan's Ramblings

Dan here ~

Thursday. It was a crisp and clear albeit windy day. Very windy. I went outside for a while but it was way too windy around the house as I was afraid my boney butt would blow away. If it were to have blown me onto the pond I would have gotten wet, as the edges of both ponds have open water. More on Mud pond than on Green. This morning I could watch the water rise and fall as the wind caused the ice to bounce up and down in time with the wind. The water has risen some but it is hard to determine how much. I would guess it has risen between one and two feet horizontally with the rain. With the ground frozen more of a rain event ends up in the pond. Hopefully, water level does not rise much more before winter really arrives. You got it time will tell, TWT.

Tonights sunset was pretty.

The clouds are pretty many nights and yes, a lot of those nights I take a picture or two. They are becoming like my Height of Land pictures. They both remind me of a bad bacteria report on a water test. TNTC, too numerous to count.

Someday I’ll put them all together in their own folders. Did you stop laughing yet? Like that will ever happen, maybe someday the camera will be able to do it itself. Probably can now but there is no way I know how. I am like most iPhone users, I know how to do the very few things I think of to use it for, and have no idea what else it is capable of. But wait, rest assured if I ever figure out some cool thing it can do, the next update will change it so I have no idea how to do it any more. I almost think I liked it better before all this technology.

I honestly don’t know how the wife managed not knowing when I’d get home without being able to call first while on the way. Come to think of it that is kinda how I got into doing all our cooking. She never knew when I would be coming home. I guess like most things there are pros and cons to everything. I like to cook so it did not bother me. The hard part, as anyone whose responsibility it is to prepare the meals knows, is figuring out what to cook and planning far enough in advance to not be running to the store constantly.

When we lived in Rangeley the IGA was rather close by and bad habits developed where not much advance planning was necessary in food preparation. Here we even bought a larger freezer for out in the shed, that way more choices were more readily available. The only problem with that is, you guessed it, remembering to take things out of the freezer in ample time for it to thaw can prove problematic. Some things take a lot longer to thaw then you would think. Well, I really don’t really know how long you would think, but surely longer than I would think. That big lump of burger taken out of the freezer this morning will be no where near thawed enough to use by supper. I do ok most nights though, we haven’t starved yet. Though there are many nights that snacks get made earlier than others.

I am having issues with the heater on the tractor. It apparently has ceased to function. Everything on the same circuit appears to function, just not the heater. While not the end of the world I’m not sending it out for repairs and possibly end up shoveling the driveway just because the heater isn’t functioning. Don’t know when they will be coming and I remembered one more thing to check. I doubt I’ll need to cancel because I figured it out. You got it TWT. Good thing my expression isn’t time will always tell.

In the studio I am diligently working on #35 for 2024. There is still a long way to go but there is still many days left this year. With the forecast it does not look like I will be spending a lot of my time relocating snow. No complaints on my part but many people in our communities rely on snow to fuel their incomes and their hobbies this time of year. From those that relocate snow, go snowmobiling, cross-country skiing or those that support those activities by maintaining trails etc..

No snow for me means I will be spending time in the studio. I have decided on two types of blocks for #35.

These are using up quite a few 5” Charm squares as they are being paired lights and darks and transferred into half square triangles. Trust me, with the number of charm squares I have and were I not too fussy how they were paired, I could easily make 10 to 15 quilts just from the 3 drawers of them stored under Lena the Long-arm. I don’t think I want to try though, could you imagine trimming that many half square triangles? My hand cramps at the thought.

Christmas is rapidly approaching. Carol and I do very little regarding the holidays. We did put up an ornament as much from habit as anything else. I received this about 65 years ago and have been displaying it every year since.

We will be getting together with the families at a date I believe, is still yet to be determined, for the normal Christmas activities. If we are to have a day of bad weather that will be the day we will have chosen.

Celebrate the holidays as you choose and hopefully you and your families will have a safe and enjoyable Holiday Season.

From Carol and I, Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.
