Dan's Ramblings

Dan here ~

Thursday evening. Another windy day with at least part of which I spent raking leaves on the beach.

The total tractor bucket count to date is 39 counting the three from today. Most of today was spent doing errands. BJ’s and some groceries.

The Bluejays have been pigs at the feeder in the mornings. I only have a seed tray and some suet out now but the birds are loving it. The Bluebirds have been around some mornings and when I came home from errands I saw two Cardinals, a male and a female. The female took off right away but the male hung for a couple photos.

They are fun to watch but seed gets pricey if we start too early and attracts the raccoons.

I guess kayaking is over for the season. I think this was Carol on her last ride.

We have opted to hang them on the outside of the storage shed up on the hill.

This opens up room for more “stuff” to be stored in the shed. I am in hopes that more of the “stuff” that we have in off sight storage can be migrated to our storage facility here on the hill. There is still more that needs to be eliminated that currently occupies space in both sheds. As my mother always said Rome wasn’t built in a day.

As I headed out for one of the last kayak rides with Carol I opted to attend to our water line. We get our water from the pond, year round. We carry our drinking water from the Oxford Public Safety building. I go every few days and get 4-6 gallons to use for coffee, drinking and cooking.

Back to my aborted kayak ride, I have been wanting to pull the end of the suction line out of the water and make sure everything was as cleaned up as I could get it. With much effort we were able to hook onto the pipe at the top the cage I am using for the end of the line.

Both the cage and the inlet screen were covered with the normal crud and slime that builds up on everything in the pond. I cleaned it all off the best I could and then lowered it back into the pond. Carol said it’s been close to twenty years since I installed this system for her mother so I guess it wasn’t too bad.

Up in the studio quilt #28 was just completed. The premise for this one was to get rid of three small minis that I made playing around one weekend with a few sewing friends. I also used up some of the fabric stored in ziplock bags of the squares needed to make 2”x 4” flying geese.

2024-28

This one was fun to design and keep it as square as possible. It is a different design concept to design as you go, versus designing everything before you start. I haven’t created like this in a while. I think I did ok. Everything seemed to fit after a few adjustments. Like the 1”x 2” flying geese that were used to make the math work going around the panels with the larger geese. There were also several places where small spacers were needed. As I named an earlier quilt, there’s always a way. Remembering there are no rules, I can do as I damn please to make it work. I think it did, I like the results.

I have not seen the comet, oh well, I’ll catch it next time. The big dipper is very eye catching on clear nights though.

The leaves keep falling and I keep raking. I have blown the leaves and pine needles off from the driveway several times in the last few days. Our driveway is on a hill and the leaves etc. cause the water to divert into new pathways and causes washouts, so I like to blow them off. Makes me feel useful.

We head to Rangeley on Saturday to stop in on Michelle Renee Hiat’s continuation of our old Fall Quilt Camps for a visit. We alway had a lot of fun with a great group of people many, of which, still attend and we will see them on Saturday. We will also be taking our youngest daughter out to supper to celebrate her birthday. I won’t say how old she is (worse than quilt math) as it’s not polite to state a lady’s age, but damn it makes me me old.

Well, embrace every nice day that we get, because you never know when they will be over for this season. Stay safe, and enjoy your weekend. Are those fall projects completed yet?
