Dan's Ramblings

Dan here ~

Thursday evening. Dang it was cold at times today especially with the stiff breeze that blew most of the day. It made it feel like fall as I raked and hauled my 4 loads of mostly pine needles off the beach. That brings the yearly total to 15 loads. I need a little more than 100 more loads to match last season. I expect the oak leaves to begin falling in great numbers soon, then the leaves will pile up fast. I did not get them all today, I only managed to get about the middle half done. Ran out of day, good excuse anyway, I’ll stick with it.

Well we got some much needed rain recently and it showed me that the driveway pretty much functioned as I intended. I still need to spread some more stone dust to achieve a smoother surface. I notice it some in the car and the truck, I really notice it on the tractor. The short, narrow wheelbase (the same properties that make it so top heavy) feels every hollow in the road and bounces all over the place. I often wonder if there is an adapter kit to widen the distance between the rear tires giving the tractor a wider stance and possibly more stability. Constantly feels like it’s going to roll over. Hopefully it never does. The tractor will see a lot of use in the near future.

The rain caused no damage to where I have filled and leveled the driveway. The ditches I created showed signs of water having run through them. I also found that when Lucas Tree was trimming trees for CMP they drove into the ditch in a couple areas. I also decided that the ditches need to be moved further from the normal driving area. Of course I dug the trenches well outside the normal driving portion of the road. I know the ditch appears to make the driveway wider, in reality it did not. I should be able to get the ditches “slid over” and deepened with a couple days of digging. I’ll work it in around the beach and getting 4-5 cord of wood ready for the neighbor. It appears I’ll have a busy fall, let’s hope it’s a long one.

I’m having issues with my heated jacket. It doesn’t work. When they work they are great. Less bulk and still warm. I reached out to the factory with some issues, we’ll see what that amounts to. Guess I’ll need to get another one. I sure do miss it, this skinny old man gets cold easy. Always something.

In the studio I finished quilt #48 for 2026. With this one I used some wildlife fabric and stacked the squares up to get 10” blocks. I used a 5” sashing made up of 5” V-blocks (don’t think I ever made any that big) and 5” Square squared blocks. A different design, but I guess they all are.

2026-48

When I was cleaning up after #48 I found a plethora of 5” four patch and a couple 10” blocks made up of 5” squares and more of the 5” four patches. I said to myself, “why not”, so I proceeded to design a layout for them and added 5 of a slightly different block and then framed them all to now be 12” blocks. The frame helps to make the transition from block to sashing consistent everywhere. It also helps to make the stars pop out better because the stars always are in contact with the same color. I chose two different sashing colors and placed them in their pattern diagonally in the top. The stars in the 2” sashing were made with Corner Pop III popping at 6. The long star points with such a narrow sashing strip was a little of a pain. But I think it came out fine.

2026-49

Most of the day today, as well as tomorrow, was and will be spent getting ready for the quilt show on Paris Hill on Saturday. We had quilts to find and more to wash. I should find out in the morning as we set up the show how many of ours will be hung. Should be at least 8-10 hopefully many more. We are bringing probably more than we need cause one never knows. You got it time will tell.

It is supposed to be wicked cold on Saturday and windy, so bundle up. Stay safe. I hope to see someone I know up on Paris Hill, no pressure. I’ll have my rocks in my pocket so I don’t blow away. Stay safe
